Vlog: Tips and Advice for New Bloggers!

I’ve been blogging for What A Nerd Girl Says for nearly TWO years now, sildenafil and I absolutely love it, more about and I love how much my life has changed since starting it. I love the people that I’ve met, and the things I’ve gotten to do, and I love writing for it.

I got a ton of feedback from you guys, all the time, and I LOVE hearing from you and one thing that I get a lot is “I’m starting my own blog; do you have advice?”

And you know, I always do the best that I can to give the best advice that I can. I have been doing this for two years but I don’t know everything and I’m learning every day how to be a better blogger and to have more and more fun with it.

So I decided to reach out to my blogger friends, and get some advice from them to share with you guys! It turned into an awesome vlog, which you can check out here:

There is a TON of great advice in this vlog, if I do say so myself, but there was also a ton of advice from these bloggers that I could not fit into the vlog so I wanted to share it below.

ADVICE and TIPS!

“Don’t be afraid to be controversial. Show up. Make your site look good. Keep your brand consistent.”

–Jackie, Seeking Bazinga

“Be serious. Don’t do it for the wrong reasons (like for perks or special admittance to events) – it shows in your work. If you genuinely love it, you’ll want it to be great, and it will be better for it.”

“Seek out other bloggers who share interests and work together.”

–Amber, Grown Up Fan Girl

“Be honest about what you write/blog about. Be true to yourself and your love for it. Be yourself. Don’t be afraid about what others will say.”

“It’s not a competition! Just do what you love! Write what you love! Share what you love! Everyone else is doing it…so don’t be afraid to share as well. Blogging is supposed to be fun where people can share their thoughts and feelings about whatever they want to share!”

–Jasmine, Movies Shows and Books

“Take notes because sometimes you have the olds and forget what you wanted to write about in your review.”

–Alethea, Read Now, Sleep Later

(This is one that I’m DEFINITELY going to start doing…)

“Patience. I’m still new to the whole blogging thing and I love it. As a starter things get slow but honestly just wait you’ll get it.”

–Kristen, Recently Acquired Obsessions

“I’ve learned if you are blogging for a particular fandom, competition can fester even if you don’t mean for it to. Fight against the urge to fall into the trap of trying to beat people, as hard as that can sometimes be. There is always someone who will feel threatened when you gain followers and they don’t. Just be true to the followers you have. Don’t be afraid to share your own personality. You can be consistent, but don’t forget to be real and to be nice. The golden rule should apply.”

–Amber, The Mortal Institute

“There will always be petty drama. I don’t care what bloggers you deal with. Just ignore it, blow it off. It’s never going away. My advice; never respond to it nor let it show that it bothers you. If you do that the you’ve let them win and you’ll forever be miserable. Just do you and be you and eff everything else.

That doesn’t mean you can’t make friends. I’ve met 3 of my closest besties from this world but it’s not often that happens or that jealousy will get the best of them. Especially if you come up with a really stellar feature to do. It’ll kill them that they didn’t think of it first and some may even try to sabotage you and your blogging rep. The blogging world is very, very similar to high school drama which is crazy considering a lot of bloggers are at least in the late 20’s.

So. Have fun with it, don’t let anyone bring you down and you’re golden.”

–Amy, Lady Reader

“Seeing as I’m still new to the whole blogging thing I’d just say do it because you love it. If you love books so much and fangirl over characters then put those feelings out there, if you love a certain celebrity, then do a whole post about them. Don’t be afraid to show the real you.

Oh and the followers will come haha. Just because you only have 60 followers (me) and other people have love thousands, don’t let that put you off. Like everyone has been saying; it’s not a competition. It’ll soon lift off. Even if you don’t have a lot of followers, it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed. Be proud of it. Love it. Talk to your blog like you would talk to a friend.”

–Hayley, Geek and Book Nerd Site

“Do you. Love what you do. Do what you love because it’s what you truly enjoy and don’t do it for the recognition. There will always be people with more connections, even people who have less traffic will sometimes get better perks and it may feel sh*tty for a bit. Just…you have to have that passion for what you’re actually doing on your site. The perks are few and far between and you have to view them as a present. A thank you for all your work. The studios don’t owe you anything and as soon as you seem entitled to them, you’re done. Be kind, to a point. Be a hardass when protecting your reputation and brand – this is a must no matter how meek and kind you want to be (I feel like I am the epitome of meek and kind, this was a learning experience). If you view the perks as the be all end all you will go crazy and destroy your mental health (I’m saying this from experience).”

–Kimmy, Page to Premiere

“Do it because you love it. Don’t ever do it because you think it’ll get you perks. That’s completely the wrong reason to have a blog. Work hard, have a passion for it, love it, get involved. When you show how much you love it and how much you love the community that comes with it, the rest falls into place. The rest is just an added bonus to the fun that you have just writing your blog. I don’t get paid to run my blog, and yet I spend a TON of time, and money and effort on it. Why? Because I genuinely enjoy doing it. I enjoy the community that I’m a part of because of it, and I enjoy meeting people who are like me. I enjoy writing it, and I enjoy interacting with anyone who comes my way. The perks that came are just an added bonus and they are still so far and few between. Start a blog because you are passionate about something and you want to share that passion with others.”

–Sara, What A Nerd Girl Says

Fandom Friday-Firefly the Fandom

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, sickness with each blog post written by a new contributor.

This is the weekly post where either myself, ask or a guest blogger, treat talks about a new fandom. See, I’ve had the experience in my life where I’ve been made fun or put down about my particular fandoms. And that has made me feel pretty crappy. But I’ve also put down other fandoms as well.

So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

If you guys are interested in becoming a guest blogger for the Fandom Friday, feel free to email me at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail.com or contact me HERE.

Ha! Its technically still Friday here! I am quite proud that I made it! I know that it has been awhile since a Fandom Friday was posted and I swear that I am trying to get better at this weekly post. I know that I am really good with the other so I promise to show the same dedication to this one as well.

This week’s guest blogger is Jackie from Seeking Bazinga and she is here to write allll about one of my favorite shows, Firefly. Enjoy!

Firefly the Fandom

I came into the Firefly fandom later than a lot of fans. I missed the original airing on Fox, which according to those who DID see it, said screwed up the viewing for almost everyone. The episodes were shown out of order. Not all the episodes were shown. They were cancelled early in the season, and only made 13 episodes. I heard they even changed the night and time it was scheduled for, and they just didn’t see the numbers they wanted and POOF!

Firefly was gone.

And there were so many of us that hadn’t even known it had been there.

But we got lucky. Someone we knew, in my case it was my soon to be sister in law, had the DVD’s. She couldn’t believe we hadn’t seen the show. She sat us down, sometimes duct tape was needed, sometimes not, and put the DVD’s on and forced had us watch the first disc. Not even the first episode. The first disc. Which is a fair commitment to TV as the pilot is 86 minutes long. And then there are two more episodes on the disc. But, I have to tell you, after you get finished with episode two, “The Train Job,” you’re hooked!

The Train Job shows the amazing directorial skills of Joss Whedon and the AMAZING ability of the actors to banter and show off their comic timing.

But the best part of the Firefly ‘verse? The fans.

Referring to ourselves as Browncoats because of the history in the show, where the Browncoats fought against unification of the planets run by the “alliance.” So, since Mal fought against the alliance and against unification, we call ourselves Browncoats. Just like Captain Mal:

Firefly made more fans after it was cancelled than while it was on the air. The DVD sales spread like wildfire because of word of mouth. And then the Browncoats became many. And they remained vigilant. And then, three years later, because the fans would not let the show die, Serenity the movie was made. And still, the Browncoats are hard core. We will never go away, we will continue to stay faithful.

In fact, I asked several of my friends why they were Browncoats. It’s very simple.

Vince:
Because you can’t stop the signal, is why.

Matt:
Because I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar.

Brandi:
Because no power in the ‘verse can stop me.

Mindy (My sister in law, and the reason I am a Browncoat):
Done the impossible. That makes us mighty

Susan Fox of Krypton Radio:
I liked Joss’ previous work [Buffy/Angel] so I picked up on this from the first episode. I thought it was a brilliant treatment of the future with some very realistic guidelines, like “no aliens” and a credible post-civil war scenario.

Dr. Tanya Mueller:
I’m not sure if I’m a true browncoat but an appreciator for sure. I like strong female characters and witty dialogue.

Cat Carter also of Krypton Radio:
I am a Browncoat cus I am a sassy-mouthed rebel grrrrl living under the supposed headship of a self-absorbed ‘leader’ and I am doing my own thing in spite of him….so I can really resonate with the Serenity crew….you can’t take the sky from me!!!

Nova:
I wouldn’t call myself brown coat either, though I loved the series and movie. I would put it on my watch list if they revived it. But I haven’t read any Firefly fan fiction or anything. It was well written and a lot of fun!
Tuesday

Kendall:
I just worship the ground Joss walks on…

Jessica Zipay (soon to be member of Nerds in Heels, coming soon!)
Hmmm, I don’t think I’d call myself a browncoat either, but I totally support their efforts and I love the series. I still have to watch the movie but I’m sure I’ll love it, too!

The fans, even the ones who aren’t hard core Browncoats, are appreciators of the series. We adore the show. We loved the movie. We are not going anywhere. We just get stronger and more adamant.

In fact, most of the cast, even though they all have had and/or are working on other shows, would reunited for more Firefly. And no one is a bigger Browncoat than Nathan Fillion, Captain Malcolm Reynolds himself. When he sees Browncoats at cons, or just out, he almost always stops to say hi and chit chat.

I was lucky enough to meet most of the cast and the great Joss Whedon at the movie premier of Serenity. I’ve never been surrounded by a nicer group of actors in my life. And because they all adore each other, and they adore Joss, they do damn near anything for the man.

There is a reason Joss Whedon is my master now….

So, if you haven’t watched the show…try it. Commit to disc one. And if you’re not a fan? You might need to turn in your geek card!

Happy Friday everyone!

Fandom Friday-Supernatural

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, information pills with each blog post written by a new contributor. This is the weekly post where either myself, ailment or a guest blogger, diagnosis talks about a new fandom. So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

This week’s contributor is Jackie, also know as Bazingirl, from the nerd blog, Seeking Bazinga. She will be writing all about the extremely popular show, Supernatural. Check it out!

Supernatural

One of the early fandoms I came into when I started to embrace my true inner geek, was Supernatural. And I’m not speaking of supernatural things in general, though I do have a personal tendency to gravitate towards things paranormal, I’m speaking the AMAZING TV show, created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural.

Supernatural starts off following two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester on a quest to find their father who has gone missing. John Winchester, their father, was on a hunting trip…but he wasn’t hunting for wildlife. He was hunting the paranormal, the things that go bump in the night and the things in your closet that scare you to death, but more specifically he was hunting the yellow eyed demon who killed his wife and maybe not so coincidentally, Sam’s college girlfriend, Jessica.

Leaving behind his leather journal, which houses every shred of knowledge John knows about the supernatural, he essentially passes on the torch to his sons, Sam and Dean, to continue the family business – saving people; hunting things.

While the boys search for their dad, they drive around in Dean’s 1967, black Chevy Impala (or as the fandom calls it, the Metallicar, because of Dean’s love of classic rock on cassette tape, no less) looking for supernatural things to hunt down and kill. All of the first season deals with Urban Legends like Bloody Mary, Hook Man, Woman in White or Weeping Woman, Wendigo, Skinwalkers, Cursed Indian Burial Grounds, Killer Scarecrows, Shtriga (child soul sucking witches) and even a couple of way nerded out guys who think they’re paranormal investigators like the guys from Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures.

As for the Fandom istelf…Supernatural has some of the most RABID fans on the internet today. It all started with the fact the the two protagonists are INCREDIBLY dreamy looking.

Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester:

and Jensen Ackles as his older brother, Dean Winchester:

These are pictures from Season One, which debuted in 2005 and they are now filming it’s 9th season. They boys have since both gotten married and Jensen now has a baby boy, named Justice Jay Ackles. The thing is? The guys have only gotten better looking as they’ve gotten older. Which sends the mostly female fans into fits of drooling. Trust me, I used to be one of the rabid drooling fans. Well, I still kind of am, especially since well, they look even better in person!!!

After season one, the fandom started going very heavily slash, which for those of you who don’t know wikipedia describes it thusly:

Slash fiction s a genre of fan fiction that focuses on interpersonal attraction and sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex.

And Wincest was born. According to SuperWiki:

Wincest is the term commonly used to describe fanfiction (or other fanworks) that depict or assume a romantic or sexual (i.e. Slash) relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester. It is the most popular pairing in Supernatural fandom, along with Destiel or Dean/Castiel.

Now, we won’t get to Castiel until his first appearance in Episode 1, Season 4 Lazarus Rising. But I don’t want to get into much after Season One, because well, you really just need to watch the series to understand all the stuff these brother go through to save people.

Now, one of the greatest things about this show, and one of the m any reasons the fans love it so much, is that like real brothers, Sam and Dean banter. They tease each other mercilessly, and then turn around and have moments of sincere and heart wrenching emotion, which makes them seem so real to us, the viewer. Especially Jensen, as Dean. One of the most touching scenes in the first season is when Dean calls his dad and asks for help, which occurs in Episode 9, “Home.” All we’ve seen Dean do up to this point is be kind of the jerk you hate to love, and in “Home” we see him scared and emotional and for the first time, vulnerable. And it’s AMAZING. Because Dean doesn’t let his guard down. He plays everything close to the chest, because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning. He covers up his feelings with humor. That’s just the way he is.

Sam on the other hand, is much more able to show his feelings openly. We see him as extremely vulnerable to begin with because he gave up hunting to try and have a normal life, going off to Stanford on a full scholarship. He hides his past from his friends, yes, but he still shows them who he really is. Everyone he meets gets a real piece of Sam upfront.

The relationship between the two brothers is vastly complex as it is with most siblings, but when you add that they’ve never had a real “home,” that they spent their lives on the road learning from their dad how to hunt all the bad things out there, you can see how that kind of life has taken it’s toll on each brother in different ways.

The relationship between the brothers is what keeps the show alive and fresh, I think. The plot has taken so many twists and turns, introduced so many memorable characters both good and evil, that the only constant is the brothers’ love for one another and their inherent sense of duty to keep people safe from evil. The show could not continue without BOTH of the Winchester Brothers. They are the glue of the show, they are the reason the fans tune in every week to watch, and they are the reason we just LOVE this show.

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, generic and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, cialis 40mg no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Megan: I am a 22 year old full time student. I am going to school at a private Christian college called Biola University, and in two years I will be the proud owner of a BA in elementary education with an emphasis in special needs, a minor in Biblical studies, and a certification to teach. My earliest memory was of me wanting to become a published writer, and that is exactly what I plan on doing. I am working on a trilogy now, but I have also been keeping up other book ideas in my journals as they come along. I write everyday, whether it is for a blog, in my diary, or for my novels – I need to write, it is my forever love. My other love is this boy Sean Patrick Sugg. In my phone he is known as “Jace Herondale”. We’ve been together for almost 6 years now, and even though he isn’t an alien, a shadowhunter, or some awesome downworlder, we have one of those real life fairy tail stories. Oh yeah, I also love to read. Obsessed with it actually; books are my heroine. I know how blessed I am and I thank God every single day!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Megan: Of all the blogs I am apart of, or that I write for, LuxenArmy.net is my baby because it is something that I had created. I brought on three other very talented girls from different time zones to help me run the website at all hours of the day, so that this becomes the best lux fansite out there! Luxenarmy.net is a fansite based on Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux series novels – it even has approval of author Jennifer Armentrout! The site offers everything from news on Jennifer Armentrout’s novels (specifically focusing on the Lux series, and the Arum series) to forums for fans to live chat in with one another, and even a place to submit lux series fanfiction and fanart! The luxen army has a twitter @LUXENarmy , a tumblr, a facebook page that you should like and, luxenarmy.net ‘s origins, the facebook group.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Megan: I started the luxen army after interviewing Jennifer Armentrout for ifandomscollide.com. I have called Lux fans the luxen army before, but after the interview, I really wanted to create a real life luxen army. I did it for fun, not expecting many people to see it because who am I? I am nobody really, just this nerd girl in LA. Well little did I know Jennifer Armentrout would catch wind of my facebook group and share about it over twitter. This facebook group of mine turned into a website, a facebook page, tumblr, and twitter because of the amount of unbelievable support that flooded in. I asked Tatiana, one of my best friends to help me out because I was new at this, she has a blog, and she was there when the luxen army invaded my life. Two other girls came to me asking if I would like help with the site, and thank God for them. Erin has designed the website beautifully, and Jessica has an AMAZING talent that I can’t wait to be shared with everyone in the Luxen Army!

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

BKgye3QCcAECgis

Megan: My FAVORITE nerd memory is Wondercon 2013. The Mortal Instruments is my favorite book series, Cassandra Clare is my favorite author, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is being made into a film, and they were having a panel at wondercon AND a meet and greet (if you happen to be lucky enough to win tickets TO the meet and greet). Lets just say I was really, REALLY lucky. Long story short, I was dressed up as one of the characters, Isabelle Lightwood (this is the nerdy part, me in cosplay. Well, I guess being at Wondercon is pretty nerdy as well…) I had an unbelievable time meeting the cast, and got kicked out for having my custom phone case signed. A security guard took my badge, and walked me out of Wondercon. We were talking the whole way out, and before I left I ended up talking my way into getting the security guard to give me my wondercon badge back so that I could still get back in. I met the cast, hugged the cast, and made a memorable exit. BEST. NERD. MEMORY. EVER…I have another amazing nerd memory meeting the director of The Mortal Instruments…I am a truly blessed nerd girl.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Megan: I can’t even fathom an answer to this question. I get butterflies in my stomach and see lots of pictures flashing in my mind of new books, movies, movie trailers, interviews, and such, when I think of this question. I am looking forward to it all.

BF75_BYCUAAL9mM

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Megan:  Series: The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Lux series, The Shades of London, The Demon’s Lexicon, The Divergent series, The Hunger Games series, The Morganville Vampires, The Hush Hush series, The Vampire Academy series, The Mara Dyer series, The Feather Trilogy…the list can go on and on. As for Authors, well that list can go on and on as well, here are just a few (not including the authors of the series I’ve listed above): Sara Dessen, Nicholas Sparks, Morgan Matson, Andrew Smith, Leigh Bardugo, Lex Thomas… and again I say the list will go on and on (I know there are a TON more authors I absolutely LOVE but did not list, please PLEASE know you’re in my heart, but if I continue to list authors I love, well this would turn into an encyclopedia length blurb!)

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

tumblr_inline_mn42qeu7I01qz4rgp

Megan: I don’t really follow blogs other than those I write for, my best friends’ blogs: whatanerdgirlsays.com and fangirlfeeels.wordpress.com, OR select authors. Cassandra Jean is the exception being neither a blog I write for, my best friend, or an author – I just think she is absolutely brilliant!

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Megan: Now THIS list will be quite long, I have more than one fictional crush. I guess I will give you my top ten – narrowing it down to only 10 is quite hard by the way.

1. Will Herondale (TID)

2. Jace Herondale (TMI)

3. Daemon Black (Lux)

4. Four (yes I put Four on 4 on purpose) (Divergent)

5. Jem Carstairs (especially after reading the Clockwork Prince graphic novel!) (TID)

6. Simon Lewis (TMI)

7. Cam Hamilton (Wait for You)

8. Adrian Ivashkov (Vampire Academy)

9. Finnick Odair (THG)

10. Nick Ryves (Demon’s Lexicon)

…OH WAIT! I have more, TONS more fictional crushes! Oh boy, I believe I am a fictional whore…

This week’s blogger is Jackie a.k.a. Bazingirl from Seeking Bazinga!

She also goes by her author name, J.J. Zwirn.

Her Twitter

Her Tumblr

Hott Damned Premier

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Jackie: I’m a geek. I love almost everything about being a geek. I love connecting with other geeks and going totally fangirl over the awesomeness of the fandom we are talking about, be it True Blood, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, Star Wars…it doesn’t matter. Talking geek is what I like to do.

I also love to write, which is why I quit my dead end day job to start writing novels. As soon as I finish one, I hope to be a PUBLISHED author, as all authors do. My writing influences range from J.K. Rowling to Stephen King to Carlos Ruiz Zafón to Shakespeare. I am also a HUGE music nerd. I’ve been singing classical and choral music since the ripe old age of 4, when I joined The Carol Lombard Singers. I’ve sung opera for many years, though was never able to make a career out of it. I also sang with one of the most amazing groups in the history of ever, The Los Angeles Choral Artists, lead by my good friend and mentor Tony Thornton. So that’s me, a card carrying, pong level geek who loves to write and sing.

Book Nerds Having High Tea

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jackie: Seeking Bazinga was inspired by one of my favorite TV shows, The Big Bang Theory. I wanted the site to be a place where readers and bloggers alike could come and get their geek on, and be proud, awesome nerds. There are many sites which also inform the public about the happenings in the geek world, which I follow and reference often, but I wanted to put my own spin on it and talk about geek things that matter to me. I will also be starting a vlog with some AMAZING nerd girls of mine called Nerds In Heels, which will be a YouTube channel soon and featured on Seeking Bazinga as well!

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Me at HP Bowling

Jackie: I’d written a blog for several years about sex, which well, tanked to be honest. I’ll admit the idea started out super fun and became completely LAME. Then, one day I felt the need to write an article about Harry Potter. I had just read an article about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter coming to Los Angeles, and felt I needed to write about it. So, I started Seeking Bazinga, so I could inform and basically fangirl about all the fandoms I love.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jackie: My favorite nerd memory? That’s HARD. But I’d have to say that the one that sticks in my head and makes me laugh every time I remember it is when my sister-in-law and I took her daughter to see Ella Enchanted with Anne Hathaway. My sister-in-law had just introduced me to a comic called Sluggy Freelance, which if you haven’t read….you should. From the first strip. Seriously. Go now. Www.sluggy.com. Now, because of the character Bun-Bun, the switchblade wielding bunny, when an attack bunny showed in the movie, I leaned over to my sister-in-law and very quietly said, “ca-click.” She damn near had to leave the theater because she was laughing uncontrollably.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jackie: The books I am most looking forward to right now is the sequel to Libba Bray’s The Diviners and just this Sunday being told I should read Stephen King’s Dark Tower series by another epic author/nerd girl. Movie wise? MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING DIRECTED BY JOSS WHEDON. OMG, I need to see this so much!!!!! And Man of Steel. I adore Henry Cavill for being hot and British, and now Superman? Yeah. However, I was a DIE HARD Chris Reeve’s fan so, I am trying to go in to seeing it with an open mind. :) Oh, and CITY OF BONES. OMG. Can that movie come out now, please???

Me and Prof McGonnagall

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Jackie: ANYTHING by Stephen King, Harry Potter (always), John Green, Libba Bray, Diana Gabaldon (zomg swoon), Cassandra Clare (yeah, I know people either LOVE her or HATE her, but I read her before I knew any of the internets crazy drama, so, I LIKE her books.), also I enjoy the dilectable works of Jane Austen and Shakespeare. Also, my new favorite book is Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Read this book. Seriously. Then read The Diviners.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jackie: Well, I religiously follow What a Nerd Girl Says, of course, because you’re one of my most favorite people in the world, Sara! I also follow The Mary Sue, Geek and Sundry (not a blog but an entire geek home base), Smart Bitches-Trashy Novels, Krypton Radio, RyannPrice.com, to name a few. And I’m always open to new suggestions!

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Jackie: I have a couple fictional character crushes. When it comes to books, the first one, who will always be my number one is Jaime Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series. He is the embodiment of Scottish, kilt-wearing sex me up now HUNK! My second is from Larrisa Ione’s Demonica series and is a delicious character by the name of Shade. He’s pretty epic, but then so are his two brothers Wraith and Eidolon. It’s kind hard to pick which one I like the most. However, my absolute NUMBER ONE fictional crush has been and ALWAYS WILL BE: Captain Tight Pants Himself: Malcolm Reynolds. And he is followed a VERY close second by the delicious bad-boy with a heart of gold, Dean Winchester from Supernatural.

Fandom Friday-Lost

Hi guys! Welcome to the Fandom Friday! This is the weekly post where either myself, cialis 40mg or a guest blogger, talks about a new fandom.

We’ve had one about the Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices written by me, and one on The Big Bang Theory as well, written by Jackie, the brains behind Seeking Bazinga. Last week’s post was by Kathleen, talking all about manga. You can expect more from the Fandom Friday, like My Little Pony, Battlestar Galatica, Star Trek, Comic books, and so much more. I’m very excited about this segment.

This week’s Fandom Friday is by Crystal, all about J.J Abram’s popular show, Lost. Read all about Crystal here:

My name is Crystal, and I’m in my early 30s. I was the slacker nerd throughout high school. I was in the gifted school, but I was constantly on probation because of my grades. I’m currently working on a PhD (and a grant application that makes me want to pull my hair out).

As you can tell, I love Lost. I’m also involved in the Harry Potter fandom and the Doctor Who fandom. I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan! Feel free to challenge me with Firefly. I always have my challenge coin on me. My most recent cos play was Fionna from Adventure Time. I’ve been playing a lot of board games lately. Oh, and I play quidditch! (You can find out all about Crystal’s Quidditch team, the OC Obliviators right here)

I remember watching the first episode of Lost back in 2004. The hype leading to this new mystery show had both my husband and me intrigued. The problem was that we did not have cable. I know it aired on ABC, but even with our TV antenna completely wrapped in aluminum foil, it was still snowy-looking. We watched the first 4 episodes through staticy snow before we had to give up.

After season 1 was available on DVD, we caught up, got cable, and started watching it weekly. The day after each new episode, I would have “Lost Lunch” with a group of friends (and friends of friends) to discuss the new episode and all of our theories. Occasionally a non-watcher would join us for lunch, and they would hang on our every word as we tried to make connections between older and newer episodes.

To put it shortly, I was a fan.

Why do I tell you all of this? Because I don’t think this experience of fans watching a show all at the same time then getting together for lunch the next day occurs anymore. Lost started before everyone had TiVo. VHS tapes were not as accessible, so you either watched it when it aired, or you had to wait a week to watch the repeat episode before the new episode. Now, more and more people watch episodes when it’s most convenient for them or wait until an entire season is available and watch all the episodes over a weekend. You don’t have time to process, speculate, and theorize with the way we watch TV now.

But I digress. Back to Lost.

The plot of Lost is actually very simple. A plane crashes on a mysterious island, and the survivors of the crash must figure out how to survive on the island. They must live together or die alone. They learn that other people are also on the island. Eventually, through the help of outsiders (people not on the island), some are rescued, but should they leave the island? Through different events, they end up on a plane together again, and (Surprise!) the plane crashes on the same island. This time, they discover the mysteries of the island.

Now all along, I had my theories. First, John Locke had to be bad. He had a cut across his eye that eventually became a scar across his eye. This is the mark of the bad guy. Second, Jack and Locke should have killed Henry Gale in the hatch. I would yell, “Shoot him!” repeatedly at the TV, but they just wouldn’t do it. Imagine how different the show would be if they just would’ve shot him.

The show was a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Curve balls were everywhere. What was up with the polar bear? How does a smoke monster work? Why do babies die? Should they have stayed on the island?

The last season, for those of us that stuck with our island friends, revealed another world. A world in which the plane didn’t crash. A world that was similar, but just a little different, from the world we know. As this sideways world was being revealed, our island friends did, indeed, go back. It’s revealed that [brother] gods controlled the island. That helps explain some of the mystery, but what about the sideways world?

The sideways world was the afterlife. The characters had to find each other in the afterlife. For me, it’s very poetic. It doesn’t exist in worldly time. Hurley is there, but as keeper of the island, he probably lived hundreds of years longer than everyone else. All of that is irrelevant. We see them as the find each other. Their experiences on the island defined them and changed them in such a way that they cross over together and will spend eternity together.

For some of my friends, the sideways world ruined everything. It didn’t answer all the questions the series asked. They “lost” 6 years of their lives to a show without a plan. I disagree!

Now, I freely admit that all of the questions were not answered. In fact, most of the questions were not answered, but that was not the point of the show. The show was about the characters, not the mysteries. People ask, “What was up with Walt?” My answer is, “He was special. He could make things happen. He lived in a world that resembles our world, but it’s not our world” The answer to most questions is simply that’s the way the world is (in the show). I fully accept this as an answer. Other people don’t. They see it as a cop-out, or the writers not knowing how to end the show. Again, I disagree. I believe the over-arching storyline existed from the beginning. I put my faith in Lost from the beginning, and even today, it’s still strong.

In short, Lost was brilliant from beginning to end.

Thanks Crystal for that SUPER awesome article on Lost. I only watched up to season four so now I’m thinking I should go back and watch all the seasons, if the ending is good like you said!
