E3: My Favorites

Its that time of year guys. Summer. The time of the big cons, find the ones I always live for and love: E3 and San Diego Comic Con. This is when my full nerd comes out; when all the announcements for new games, books, movies, etc. come out and giving me nerdgasm after nerdgasm. With E3 basically wrapped up (and of course, I didn’t go. You have to be so-and-so’s second cousin twice removed to get into that guy haha), I’ve compiled a short list of what excited me the most, what I’m looking forward to the most.

Disclaimer: This is a list of things that I personally am excited for. This is in no way the best of the best of E3. You’ll notice that I’ve left out the new Halo stuff, the previews of Black Ops 3, and virtually nothing to do with Nintendo. I’m not a hardcore gamer, nor do I ever claim to be one. There are video games out there that I enjoy playing and I get excited for but I’m not an authority or an expert at all. So don’t judge me on the silly video games that I’m looking forward to.

All right, nerd rant over. Sorry. Whew.

Moving on to the seven things that caught my eye at this year’s E3.

7. Lego Lord of the Rings

Image

I know, I know, I know, another Lego game. Lego just seems to churn them out the way Danielle Steel churns out terrible cheesy romance novels. In the beginning, the Lego games were awesome, unique and fun. As they’ve released more and more (Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter, etc), they haven’t been as fantastic as they were in the beginning. However, they are extremely fun…especially for kids and for those, like me, who aren’t the best at video games. (Hey, I love video games, but it takes me AGES to beat one and play one, I just suck haha). So the Lord of the Rings Lego game actually looks pretty awesome. The developers explain that they built the entire Middle Earth world to play the entire saga and instead of going from level to level, you actually walk the land. Sort of like a little kid RPG. And to make it even better, instead of having those ridiculous ‘voices’, they actually speak. Which means, yes, yes, indeed we will be able to see a Lego Gandalf say “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” Fantastic.

6. Wonderbook

Image

Now don’t get me wrong. I love to read. I love books and I love the SMELL of books. And for the most part, I’ve been pretty happy with the Kindle. As a person, who reads super fast, the Kindle works wonderfully for me. Now the new Sony Wonderbook isn’t exactly tickling my fancy but it is kind of intriguing. The idea is that this device is book-shaped “controller” that will be complemented with the Playstation Eye and Move controller to help make books more of a virtual reality. That sounds both interesting and weird at the same time. Bringing to life those familiar images of loved books is the reason we go to see the movies based on books. This could be similar. But I also like reading books because I have my own idea in my head of what this character looks like and what that place looks like, etc. So my interest in this device is only half there. However, the Wonderbook has one thing going for it. One of the first platform books available for this device is the Book of Spells, which is going to be linked with J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore, the interactive Harry Potter website that is hosted by Sony. This hands-on book is going to have new Harry Potter info and stories, including Aesop-like stories of wizards making mistakes, which ultimately leads to a teaching lesson. This alone, as a HUGE Potterhead, is almost enough for me to spend the money. This is also the only reason it got the number six spot. I’m just not interested enough in this for it to be any higher but it does have Harry Potter. That, is enough, to catch my interest.

5. Playstation All Stars Battle Royale

Image

Let’s be honest: this is exactly like Super Smash Brothers for Playstation. Its Sony’s answer for it. Now other games that are similar have been created before but this one has been getting way more attention, mostly because it is Playstation and because it includes notable characters like Kratos from God of War, Sly Cooper, Mael Radec from Killzone 2, Fat Princess, etc. Just announced Monday at E3, Nathan Drake from the epic Uncharted games (LOVE those games), and Big Daddy from the equally epic Bioshock games will be joining the teams. Now the preview and images already released from this game reveal a cool looking fighting platform and the levels look pretty creatively designed. I’m excited for this game because games like this involve my favorite style of gameplay: button mashing. I’m a damn good button masher.

4. Assassin’s Creed III

Image

I’ve never played any of the Assassin’s Creed games before. I know, insert shocked and angry gasps here. I know, I know. I’m sure it’s a great game. I’ve watched my sister and brother play the games and they look awesome. The reason that this game catches my interest is because of when this game takes place: The American Revolution and the continuation of American history after that. From what I’ve seen and read about, it includes a new protagonist named Connor and the gameplay, while different, is still familiar enough that fans of the series will feel comfortable. Those who have demoed it have said the gameplay is extremely impressive and that the new naval warfare aspect of the game is pretty awesome. I’m looking forward to finally experiencing an AC game, especially in this time period. As a history major, and a complete nerd for the American Revolution, it’s looking like a game that I definitely want to pick up on October 30th.

3. Star Wars 1313

Image

This game is in extreme early development, and there wasn’t a huge demo to preview at E3 but the concept of this has got me excited. Most Star Wars games have been pretty disappointing to me. I wasn’t a fan of the Force Unleashed games and I haven’t had a chance to play Old Republic. This game, though, has caught my attention. For one, it breaks away from the games centered around the Force, with the protagonist being a bounty hunter instead of a Jedi or Sith. The identity of the bounty hunter is yet unknown but the content is said to be more mature than any of the previous Star Wars games and the images already released are GORGEOUS. I’m definitely looking forward to the future and am hoping for more content to be released soon.

2. Resident Evil 6

Image

I’m sure this comes as shock that this is my number two, especially when you see my number one. Leave me alone. Moving on…literally, I’ve been waiting for this game forever. FOREVER. Resident Evil 5 came out about a billion years ago and I’ve been dying for some good ol awesome Resident Evil gameplay. So the Resident Evil gameplay at E3 got this girl super excited. Now in this story, they’re bringing back two of my favorite characters, Leon and Chris, (hubba hubba), and introducing a new character, Jake. Each of these characters are in a separate storyline: Leon is in the U.S. working with the president during an attack of bioware terrorism, Chris is in China, fighting a similar attack, and Jake is in a European country called Edonia, meeting up with an old character that fans will be excited to see. Eventually all these stories will meet up and interweave and you’ll be able to play as all the characters. Game Developers say that they’ve fine-tuned the co-op, making it possible to jump in and jump out of gameplay without having to wait for a cut scene. They also touch on being able to play as a foursome when the different characters meet up in the story. Watching the various gameplay looked really cool, the good ol’ fashioned fighting style is there but you can see that that are new attacks coming, especially in the melee category. I honestly haven’t seen anything to make me feel wary about this. There This game is going to be awesome, and I’m seriously counting down the days until it comes out on October 2nd.

1. LittleBigPlanet Karting

Image

Carting isn’t exactly new to the realm of gaming. One of the most iconic games in all of video game history is Mario Kart. And of course this game is probably going to be along the same lines. However, this is the most exciting to me for two reasons. One is that I’m a huge LBP fan. These are my favorite games. They are fun, silly and hard enough to be a challenge but not so hard that I get frustrated. And the second reason I’m looking forward to this game is because it has something that Mario Kart doesn’t have, something that is going set it apart from that game. It has the customization of the other two LBP games; you can customize maps, characters, karts and weapons. This is what makes me anxious for this game to come out. This is my most anticipated game of the year and the highlight of my E3.

Now I know that I missed a lot of things and I’m sure there are some of you out here, glaring and yelling at your computer screen. Well, let it out in the comments and tell me what has gotten you all excited at E3?

Quidditch, Anyone?

Yeah, this I said Quidditch.

For all you Muggles out there, this there is a version of Quidditch that is played in our world.

No, view we don’t fly. I’m sorry to disappoint you.

Apparently playing Quidditch in the Muggle world has been around for awhile. The International Quidditch Association, or the IQA, was founded back in 2007 and there are tons of community teams, college teams, and even high schools are jumping aboard from countries all over the world.

Image

I just recently discovered Muggle Quidditch. I know, insane, right? Biggest Harry Potter fan ever and I didn’t even know about Muggle Quidditch. Travesty.

Anyway, the first time I experienced Muggle Quidditch was at the Intermagical Relations Picnic and Quidditch Tournament back in October. It was my very first meetup with the amazing, awesome, fantastical Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army.

Now the best way for me to describe Muggle Quidditch is its a combination of basketball, soccer, rugby and dodgeball. All at the same time. While riding three foot brooms. Yeah.

I’m not going to go through the rules and gameplay. Its just too much to explain.

But I will tell you one thing: Its SO MUCH FUN!

I’m not an athletic person. I am the type of person who trips over flat ground while walking, the girl who finds bruises and has no idea where they came from. I was that girl who either skipped P.E. or always seemed to be having women troubles so I didn’t have to jump those hurdles or run that mile. Yeah, that’s me.

And the thing that you have to understand, as silly as Muggle Quidditch sounds, it is an extremely athletic sport. It involves a lot of running, throwing and catching, tackling and blocking, all while holding a broom between your legs. Its hard work.

But I love it! Its so much fun to play, even though I’m sure I’m just as terrible at it as I am playing basketball or softball. But Its the fun of it that makes me come back for more and more.

One of my good friends from Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army (henceforth known as LADA) contacted a few of us with the idea of starting an Orange County community team.

There is an L.A. team, the Hollywood Harpies. They are awesome, and you should definitely check them out; they play often and they’re a blast to watch.

Anyway, so we got together and we started our team: The Orange County Obliviators.

Image

We’ve been practicing together as a team for a couple months now, learning the game, since most of us are not the biggest athletes in the world. But we’re having fun and we’re coming together as a team. When we first started, there were only five or six of us and yesterday at practice, we had enough people to run a full scrimmage (minus the Seeker/Snitch).

So I definitely encourage you to check it out. There are over 400 collegiate and high school teams out there and the number is growing every day. Just in the last year, we created our community team and my old high school created their own team. I encourage all you nerds to do it because its keeping the Harry Potter alive and its SERIOUSLY SO MUCH FUN.

I literally can’t emphasize how much fun this is.

So definitely go on the IQA website and check it out. Head out to a Quidditch game. I guarantee that you will leave that game wanting to play.

And hey, if there aren’t any teams near you, or your school does have one, do what we did! Start a team, get your friends involved, get your college involved! If big schools like USC and UCLA can get in on this, anyone can!

And if nerdy, flat-footed, extremely uncoordinated, short and slightly rotund girls like me can get involved and LOVE IT, you can too!

New Harry Potter Box Set: Good or Bad?

Recently, visit this Bloomsbury-publisher of the Harry Potter series-announced that they would released a three book box set in fall 2012.

Now, page of course, symptoms Potterheads everywhere went nuts. With the book series finished in 2007 and the movies series finished just last summer, we’re dying to keep the magic alive with some new releases, anticipation and excitement. Pottermore had its moments: I loved getting a wand, getting sorted and learning some extra information, especially the McGonagall back story. But lets get real, after an insanely long beta period and only Philosopher/Sorcerer’s Stone available, Pottermore turned out to be kind of a disappointment.

So the announcement of a three book box set kind of got people excited. Potter fans have been dying for an encyclopedia (put on hold indefinitely), Hogwarts: A History, A History of Magic and other books found in the HP universe.

I, on the other hand, did not get my hopes up. Let’s face it. JKR has been working on all that extra stuff for Pottermore (when the heck are we going to see more?!) and she is putting out a new novel in September. I just don’t see her having the time to write anything else.

And of course, I ended up being right. Bloomsbury announced just a few days ago that this box set was to include: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Its a special edition box set, first time they are all available in hardback, etc.

Image

And while I am most likely going to be purchasing this because, its insanely hard to deny, I’m a Harry Potter addict and I need anything that has the boy wizard on it, I’m not really excited about it. Straight up, I already own all three of these. Most Potterheads own all three of these. I’m all for special editions and releasing but does anyone else think, maybe its just too soon? It seems more like they’re trying to capitalize on the fame and popularity of Harry Potter at this exact moment.

A lot of people thought the split of the last book into a two part movie was for profit only. Now, I genuinely believed that Deathly Hallows was split into two parts for integrity to the novel, not to make money. I do believe this. I didn’t at first but after seeing both parts, I do actually think that. Both movies were done so well and are so enjoyable. And I am impressed at how much it seemed to follow the book, especially the dialogue.

Now, however, I’m feeling a little bit apprehensive. Just because I love Harry Potter and want to buy everything HP related in sight doesn’t mean I want to be taken advantage of.

It makes me think of the insanely expensive, super special limited edition movie box set coming out in September. 31 discs, hand numbered and yours for only 350 dollars, you’d expect something extraordinary. Something worth waiting for.

Image

It definitely LOOKS cool. However, it only has the extended edition of the first two movies and the digital copies are through Ultraviolet, a website that requires a membership and a site that I’m not too fond of. All the extras do sound exciting but the fact is, I want all extended editions of ALL THE MOVIES, not just some.

As far as I see it, Harry Potter will never go away. Its a book that has literally changed the lives of so many people, and it definitely has for me. I will literally grab anything new that is Harry Potter that comes my way. On the other hand, I’m not going to keep buying stuff just because its boxed different and called “limited” and “special”.

Now don’t get me wrong. I am going to buy that three book box set.

That insanely priced movie box set? Yeah, probably not. College kids don’t make that much money, especially when they’re saving for cars haha.

What do you guys think? Is Bloomsbury just giving us something to get excited for, trying to get these awesome companion books out and available to everyone? Or are they just trying to make some money by releasing books that are already pretty easily bought?

Only Starkid Can Save us From the Apocalypse…with Music!

http://teamstarkid.com/

So last night, my best friend, my little sister and I journeyed down the 101 freeway to Sunset Blvd to the House of Blues in Los Angeles to see Team Starkid perform on their summer Apocalyptour!

Image

For those of you who don’t know Starkid…well you are missing out! Starkid is a theatre group, originally out of Ann Arbor, Michigan at the University of Michigan. They did what they called the Harry Potter Musical, later changed to A Very Potter Musical to avoid any entanglements with Warner Bros. They slapped it together on YouTube and bam! Internet fame. They later followed the highly successful and extremely funny AVPM with: Me and My Dick, A Very Potter Sequel, Starship and, most recently, Holy Musical B@man.

Oh yeah, and they’re home to Darren Criss. Yes, that Darren Criss. The one you all drool over every Tuesday night on Glee.

Image

But what you didn’t know is that this group is full of amazingly talented and funny actors/actresses like Joey Richter, Joe Walker, Jamie Lyn Beatty, Lauren Lopez, Brian Rosenthal, Meredith Stepien, Brian Holden, Jim Povolo, Julia Albain and so many more and they showcased their epic awesomeness last night at the Apocalyptour show.

Image

The show started off with an opening band, Charlene Kaye and the Brilliant Eyes. Very awesome enjoyable music, got the crowd super pumped up and excited. And there were definitely fans in the audience too! They even brought Darren and Dylan to help out with a couple of songs!

Then the amazingness happened. And yes amazingness is a word.

I scoffed at all the fan girls crowding the stage, screaming their lungs out as the lights dimmed for Starkid. And then they came on stage, and I found my inner fan girl and started screaming right along.

The show was different than your average show; instead of just randomly playing songs, there was a story to it. Our ragtag team of Starkids get super excited for their camping expedition when suddenly they find an ancient Mayan tablet. By reading it out loud, they unleash the fury of an ancient deity who is ready to destroy the earth.

Unless Starkid can stop them!

Starkid promises an awesome show that’ll make the deity think twice about destroying the world!

And believe me, they had me convinced. They played all the favorites and I found myself dancing and singing and jumping up and down like I was thirteen years old. This group is full of talented and fun people and they had the crowd the whole show, laughing, dancing, and just having a super blast.

And to make it even better, they played all the favorites, a nice mix from all the musicals. I squealed when Lauren Lopez and Joey Richter did the classic ‘Granger Danger’, swooned when Darren Criss belted out ‘Home’, laughed my ass off when Joe Walker and Joe Walker sang ‘Me and My Dick’ and screamed with joy when the whole crew got us singing along to ‘Gotta Get Back to Hogwarts’.

All in all, I had an awesome time. Sadly, their last California show was tonight in San Francisco show, and all others are too far for me to even think about trekking out to. But if Starkid is heading to a town near you, I urge you to go, its definitely a fun fun fun time!

You can check out more about starkid at their website:

And even better, met the talented, silly, and super nice Nick Lang!

Geek Pride Day*

Happy Geek Pride Day everyone!

My dad texted me this morning to let me know that it was geek pride day and all I could think of was…isn’t that every day?

I guess that’s only for me!

And maybe you too!

Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. Also known as my favorite movie of ALL TIME!

Some people have asked me how I am going to celebrate.

And my answer to that is:

work.

haha.

But maybe I can pull a “superman” and wear a Star Wars shirt under my work shirt tonight.

And besides, cialis 40mg I’m always sporting my geek, order always:

So happy Geek Pride Day everyone! Get those geeky shirts out, pop in a movie and just spend the day GEEKING OUT! And just know that I’m there with you!

A New Mode of Transportation

So my goal of the summer, case besides having a wicked awesome time before being literally buried underneath homework at CSUF in the fall, health is to buy a new car.

I love my current car, check especially with all her nerd stickers, but its time to move on. And as I’ve been perusing autotrader, trying to figure out what car I want, I’ve been thinking of all the different modes of transportation in all the fandoms I’m obsessed with.

And then I came up with a list. A list of my top 8 most wanted fictional modes of transportations.

I know, the title kind of sucks…moving on…

8. A Horse (Lord of the Rings/Narnia/Tortall Realm)

I know, a horse isn’t exactly fantastical. We have horses all over the place; there is a small horse ranch about five minutes away from my work. However, I have never actually been on a horse and all those fantasies like Lord of the Rings and Narnia, god even Flynn Rider in Rapunzel, have super awesome horses and knights and battles and they’re all so fun! I would love to be a knight with my stallion, riding into battle!

7. the Black Pearl (Pirates of the Caribbean movies)

Okay, now who didn’t want to be a pirate? Seriously? It doesn’t matter than they were super filthy, hardly ever bathed, were probably covered in lice and were super poor. Pirates are sexy. There’s something awesome about the idea of living on the open sea, on a huge ship, and pillaging and plundering. Of course, if Johnny Depp was on board, I definitely would be down to ride that ship…

6. X-Wing Fighter (Star Wars)

Thank you, George Lucas, for possibly the coolest little fighter ship in the world-though I don’t think it sounds too tough when you call it little. Hey, little things can be tough too. Look at that Ewoks, haha. Anyway, this was one of the coolest things about watching Star Wars when I was little. Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing was super badass and the fact that he had his buddy R2-D2 with him at all times only made it that much cooler. I’m pretty sure my best friend Allison would NOT be too stoked about riding shotgun in this ship.

5. Pegasus (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)

Now I’m not going to lie, I’m terrified of heights. Just the mere thought of them, my god, my knees turn so super weak. So that leaves me thinking that riding on the back of what essentially is a flying horse wouldn’t exactly be my cup of tea. But come on, it’s a flying horse! And I’m pretty sure Blackjack, Percy’s Pegasus, would NOT drop me (at least I hope not) and would take me all the way up to Olympus. And unlike Percy,I have no fear of being struck down by Zeus.

4. Flying House (Up)

IT’S A FLYING HOUSE! Its millions and millions of balloons suspending an actual house all the way to South America (It’s like America…but south!). And just like Russell says in the movie, you get to have all your stuff with you when you travel! That sounds like a pretty fantastic thing to me. And don’t you dare tell me that it isn’t real! Some engineers got it into their head that this could be possible and proved it! If you’ve never seen the real Up house, here’s the video for it!

3. The Tardis (Doctor Who)

It’s a box. That’s bigger on the inside. That can travel anywhere in time. And space. AND it has had the sexy David Tennant and the equally as sexy Matt Smith inside. Do I really need to say anymore?

2. Millennium Falcon (Star Wars)

“You came in that thing? You’re braver than I thought.”–Princess Leia
Now I’ve wanted to be Princess Leia my whole life…and I’ve pretty much wanted to marry Han Solo my whole life. It only makes sense that I’d want to travel in the Millennium Falcon. Its the biggest hunk of junk in the galaxy but its fast and its the ship that blows up the Death Star for good. As long as I have Chewie as my co-pilot, I’m good to go.

1. Firebolt (Harry Potter)

I live for Harry Potter, I breathe, eat, sleep, drink Harry Potter. So of course what I would want the most is Firebolt Racing Broom. Its the fastest broom in the world, you can travel pretty much anywhere and you can play Quidditch, the coolest sport in the world. What more could I possibly want? You know, besides kicking ass in the Quidditch Cup and beating Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff?

Now I realize that I literally can have none of these, besides a horse-which is just not logical in Southern California-but its always nice to dream. And as I spend time this summer looking for that perfect car, I can only super hope that I will have as many badass adventures in my car as my favorite characters have had in theirs.
