The Kind Of Stories That Make You Think

Hey! I just felt like I needed to write about this somewhere and the best place would be right here, view because I know you guys will totally understand what I’m saying.

So, I guess a lot of you have either read books by John Green or at least heard about them. Now, one thing that draws me into his books is that sense of reality. You know what I mean? These are the kinds of stories that actually have you believing in something a little bit better than what we have. They don’t always have the happiest of endings, but they end in a way that leaves the protagonist feeling better about the direction their life is taking. I love books like this. In fact I need books like this, because sometimes you just need a reminder that the real world isn’t so bad.

I mean I enjoy fantasy reading and science fiction is always entertaining, but there’s nothing quite like contemporary reading. It gives you a nice reminder that although bad things happen to you, there’s always good stuff too. Think on the bright side, if these bad things didn’t happen in our lives then the good things wouldn’t make us nearly as happy as they do. Speaking from experience, some of the best things that ever happened to me happened BECAUSE of the bad.

I just wanted to write something short, but sweet to remind people to keep smiling. Whatever is going on you’ll get through it. Look at Hazel, (The Fault In Our Stars, John Green) and Miles, (Looking For Alaska, John Green); Both very different characters and yet similar in their progression as people. What happened to them made them stronger, not weaker. Ultimately they came out of the other end of their tragedies as the kind of people who appreciated life more, they had unforgettable memories and they wanted to live their lives to the full.

I think it’s important that we all do the same. If you’re ever feeling down, or feeling like things are all going wrong for you just pick up one of these books. I’m going to write a list of my own top ten contemporary novels sometime in the future. They’re not always feel good, but you always finish the book with a new appreciation for what’s going on around you. That and a box full of used up tissues next to you.

  1. i love love John Green and his 2 books that you mentioned here. The story is guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings, truly one of a kind! To quote Bjork: “There are certain emotions in your body that not even your bestfriend can sympathize with, but you will find the right film or the right book, and it will understand you.”

    Keep smiling! :)

  2. I’ve only read THE FAULT IN OUR STARS but I thought it was incredibly real and powerful. That’s what I love about John Green. His stories are all so INCREDIBLY real. Sometimes bad things happen and nothing can stop them, but at some point later downt eh line another good thing will happen. We just have to keep our head up and tred on to that good thing.

Thank you for writing this. :)
